Our class task: to construct a nomadic dwelling prototype in teams of 5. We started by deconstructing the words nomadic and dwelling: temporary, impermanent, transitory, and a place to be, reside, think. Built for those burdened with living in non-permanent places and in need of a space to worship, we prioritise a healthy mentality in these distressing living conditions. NOMADDWELL can provide a safe, open space where people of multiple religions can come and pray peacefully. It combines traditionally sedentary practices of private reflection and public spiritual gatherings with the practical, nomadic aesthetic of community, minimum weight and materials. From conceptual drawings we modelled in Autodesk Maya, projected it 1:1 onto to plywood sheets and hand-cut each plate. These wooden plates were ‘sown’ together with cable ties which allowed for the structures key strength to be its flexibility. It bent and held in the extremely harsh weather conditions of the Gulf for over a year. We were honored to be shortlisted for the Jeanne-Claude Christo Award and travel to Italy for this project.
