Abstract
This publication seeks to elevate the conversation about the importance of involving citizens in the process of designing our cities, with a particular focus on what young people can bring to the table.
As the only native English speaker on the editing team, I was responsible for a large amount of the content production, editing and proofing. It required thorough research into the democratic design traditions of Scandinavia and the particular design practice of Denmark and arki_ lab. It is a culmination of arki_lab’s participatory design projects, tools and techniques.
“Urban design stands on the founding mantra of designing cities for people, which entails the designer creating spaces with a specific user group in mind. This is an important first step in good design practice. We advocate for taking it a step further into what we call the new paradigm of ‘designing with people’. This means involving citizens directly in the design process through tailor-made engagement processes. In this book, we will describe the strategies we use when designing places for and with young people.”
